A young Swedish student is still missing after falling from a cliff and into the water while sightseeing in Sydney.

Police have seen no sign of the man, believed to be 20, as the search resumed today after he fell from rocks and into the water at Bluefish Point in Manly yesterday afternoon.

"He was climbing on a rockface we're led to believe it's an unofficial trail that they were climbing on and he has simply fallen through misadventure," NSW Police said today.

"We believe he was there sightseeing with about five or six friends."

The man has been living in Sydney on a student visa and his family is understood to be travelling to Australia.

Emergency services and surf lifesavers carried out an extensive search of the water yesterday but couldn't find him.

The search was suspended and resumed early this morning.
