A man has been shot dead at a police station in far northern NSW after pointing a gun at officers.

The 48-year-old man attended the Tenterfield Police Station at about 5.45pm on Thursday and aimed the firearm at officers before he was shot, police said in a statement.

Paramedics and police tried to help the injured man but he died at the scene.

The homicide squad is investigating why the New England Police District officers were targeted, and why the firearm was discharged.

This will be subject to an independent review, according to police.
