'The nicest person I knew': Fatal crash devastates Adelaide Hills community

9News
A man has died and another is fighting for life in hospital after a crash in the Adelaide Hills.
Nick Peart, a 39-year-old father-of-three, died after 28-year-old driver Campbell Smith lost control of the ute they were in and slammed into a tree.
Mr Peart and Mr Smith, who were friends and neighbours, crashed on Pyrites Road in Brukunga, about 30 kilometres east of Adelaide, about 5.30pm on Monday.
The smash was so close to where the pair lived the victim's wife raced towards the scene after hearing emergency sirens.
The tragedy has left the tight-knit community reeling, as devastated friends and family try to come to terms with the loss.
"He was like the nicest person I knew. He'd help anybody," Tahnia Heal, a neighbour and friend of the victim, told 9News through tears.
"We're very devastated.
"They're very good friends of ours. We caught up with them most days."
The men had struck up a friendship after becoming neighbours nine months ago.
Ms Heal's husband was a close friend of the pair.
"They were good guys, top blokes," Ms Heal said.
Neighbour Melissa Hall said the men would regularly be outside around the bonfire in cold weather.
"It's going to impact everyone around the entire (Adelaide) Hills," she said.
"It's a bit shocking being close to home."
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
