Grandmother shot dead in 'horrendous' targeted attack in Newcastle

The fatal shooting of a grandmother in the NSW Hunter region has been described by police as a "horrendous" targeted attack.
Officers said Stacey Klimovitch, 61, was shot after she answered her front door last night at a home on Queen Street in the Newcastle suburb of Stockton.
Her 31-year-old daughter and eight-week-old granddaughter were home at the time of the shooting. The pair had recently moved in after becoming estranged from the child's father.

"It's horrendous," Detective Superintendent Wayne Humphrey said.
"An innocent person has answered the front door of a home and she's been shot in the chest and killed in the presence of a relative and a child.
"It doesn't get any worse."

Ms Klimovitch's best friend and neighbour had spoken to her seconds before the callous attack.

"That's when I heard the noise and the screaming, I tried to call her but I couldn't get her on the phone," she told 9News.
"She was a brand new grandmother, and so happy to be a brand new grandmother."
The 61-year-old is survived by a son with Autism who requires full time care.
A manhunt is underway across the NSW Hunter region and detectives do believe they know who they are looking for.
Police say the alleged shooter, a younger man, is known to the family.

He also assured the Stockton community the likelihood of a reoccurrence "is very unlikely".
