Afghanistan veteran charged after chemicals found in Sydney home




A former soldier remains behind bars after being charged with firearms and explosive offences following police raids on two homes in Sydney's south-west.
Officers from the counter-terrorism unit arrested former SAS soldier and Afghanistan veteran Michael Brown yesterday morning at a property on Argyle Street in Picton, where they allegedly discovered a stockpile of chemicals and equipment used to make explosives.
A crime scene was established at the Argyle Street home and at a second address at Wild Street, also in Picton.

The arrest comes after a large scale police operation involving hazmat and bomb detonation officers. (9News)
A large scale hazmat operation, involving a bomb disposal squad and members of the NSW Fire and Rescue team, revealed chemicals in both locations as well as a bomb detonator casing and an unauthorised firearm.
Equipment including a rotary evaporator, heating mantle and glassware, as well as liquids and acids including fuming nitric acid, commonly used in the production of explosives, were also seized for forensic examination.
The 54-year-old was taken to Narellan Police Station and charged with possessing an unauthorised prohibited firearm, and possessing, supplying or making an explosive for an unlawful purpose.

Mr Brown appeared before the court today where he made no application for bail.
The court ordered he undergo a psychiatric assessment while in custody before the case will returns to court next month.
Police have not established any ongoing threat to the community and investigations are continuing.
